We're picked up from our Kathmandu hotel before dawn and transferred to the domestic terminal at Tribhuvan International Airport, where weight checks and a safety briefing precede boarding. As the helicopter climbs east, the Kathmandu Valley falls away quickly, replaced by a rising wall of Himalayan foothills stretching toward Solukhumbu. After a short refuelling stop at Lukla, the legendary gateway airstrip to Everest, we continue deeper into the mountains, tracking the Dudh Koshi valley past Namche Bazaar and Tengboche Monastery far below. At Pheriche, the group transfers into a lighter shuttle configuration — only two or three passengers per run — for the final, highest leg of the journey, where the terrain turns from forested ridge to bare glacial moraine. Approaching Kala Patthar, the Khumbu Glacier and Everest Base Camp unfold beneath us, and the helicopter sets down at 5,545 metres for five to ten minutes — just enough time, given the thin air and cold, to take in Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse looming directly ahead. From here we fly to Syangboche and land at Hotel Everest View, where a leisurely breakfast comes with a 360-degree panorama of the Everest massif, a striking contrast after the brief, exposed minutes at Kala Patthar. Reboarding for the return, we retrace the route via Lukla back toward Kathmandu, watching the glaciated high peaks give way once more to green foothills and finally the Kathmandu Valley. By late morning we're back at Tribhuvan International Airport and transferred to our hotel, having reached the base of the world's highest mountain and returned within a single day.
