Kathmandu's old city rewards slow, on-foot exploration more than almost anywhere else in the valley — narrow lanes opening into hidden courtyards, spice markets, and centuries-old shrines wedged between shopfronts. This walking tour threads through Ason, Indra Chowk, and the backstreets around Thamel, pausing along the way for a running series of street-food tastings — a total of 9 samplings (local Nepali food, noodle soup, Nepali momo, pancake, cookies, donut, tea/coffee, snacks, drinks, dessert) and other local specialities picked up from trusted local vendors. It's built as a sensory, ground-level introduction to Kathmandu, better suited to food-curious travellers and shorter stays than a full sightseeing day, and works well as an evening activity after a day of temple visits elsewhere in the valley.
Thamel (meeting point) → Ason → Indra Chowk → Old City backstreets → Thamel
4:00 PM — Meet Your Guide. We meet at a central point in Thamel, timed for late afternoon when the old city's markets are at their busiest and most atmospheric.
4:15 PM – 5:15 PM — Ason Bazaar. Time on site: 60 min. We walk into Ason, Kathmandu's oldest and busiest market square, where spice stalls, temples, and everyday city life sit shoulder to shoulder. Our first food stops happen here — a taste of freshly made momos or a savoury snack from a stall our guide knows well.
5:15 PM – 6:15 PM — Indra Chowk & Old City Backstreets. Time on site: 60 min. From Ason we continue to Indra Chowk, historically a hub for textile and pashmina trade, then duck into the quieter backstreets behind the main bazaar — small courtyards, shrines, and workshop fronts most visitors walk straight past. More tastings follow along the way, including a sweet course such as yomari or seasonal Newari treats.
6:15 PM – 7:00 PM — Return to Thamel. We make our way back toward Thamel, wrapping up with a final stop and a chance for questions before the tour ends.
