Overview

The Khopra Ridge Trek (also widely known as the Khopra Danda Trek) is one of the most mesmerizing off-the-beaten-path journeys in the heart of the Annapurna Region. Built as a pristine alternative to busier classic routes, it winds through peaceful rhododendron woodland, dramatic terraced slopes, and high-alpine ridgeline positioned directly across from the colossal Kali Gandaki Gorge.

The crowning highlight is reaching Khopra Danda (3,660 m) and the sacred alpine waters of Khaire Lake (4,660 m), resting at the foot of Mount Annapurna South. From these high perches, trekkers get face-to-face views of mountain giants including Dhaulagiri I (8,167 m) — the world's seventh-highest mountain — alongside Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna South (7,219 m), Nilgiri (7,061 m), Machhapuchhre (6,993 m), and Hiunchuli (6,441 m). Along the way, warm hospitality awaits in community-run teahouses and traditional Pun Magar and Gurung villages like Swanta and Ghandruk.

Best Time to Visit Khopra Ridge

Autumn (September – November): The most popular window for this trek. Post-monsoon conditions clear away dust and cloud, delivering crisp air, pleasant daytime walking temperatures, and full panoramas of Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range.

Spring (March – May): A spectacular season as lower and mid-altitude trails transform into blooming rhododendron and magnolia forest. Temperatures stay mild, days grow longer, and wildlife along the ridge becomes more active.

Winter (December – February): Crisp blue skies and tranquil trails, though high-altitude temperatures at Khopra Ridge dip well below freezing, and heavy snowfall can occasionally close the upper trail to Khaire Lake.

Monsoon (June – August): Lush vegetation, active streams, and green pastures, but frequent rain brings muddy, slippery trails and leeches, with mountain views often shrouded by mist.

Pokhara → Ghandruk/Kimche → Baisi Kharka → Tadapani → Dobato

Our Khopra Ridge adventure begins with an early morning 4WD jeep ride from Pokhara, winding past Nayapul and climbing steadily through mountain roads toward Ghandruk or Kimche, our trailhead for the day.

Leaving the more crowded classic Annapurna trail behind almost immediately, we climb a long run of stone steps into dense rhododendron and oak forest, passing quiet rest stops at Baisi Kharka and Tadapani along the way.

As the forest begins to thin near Dobato, the tree cover opens up to reveal our first real mountain panorama — Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Annapurna South rising directly ahead, a striking reward after a demanding opening day.

Trek Distance
10 km / 6.2 miles
Highest Altitude
3,660 m / 12,008 ft
Trek Duration
5–6 hrs
Khopra Community Teahouse Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Dobato → Muldai Peak → Bayeli Kharka → Khopra Ridge

We're up before sunrise for a short but worthwhile climb to the Muldai Peak viewpoint (3,637 m), where the first light catches both the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges in a single sweeping panorama.

After breakfast back at Dobato, we set off along an open ridgeline trail toward Bayeli Kharka, moving through a mix of high alpine pasture, thinning rhododendron thicket, and increasingly open mountain slope — a landscape that feels noticeably wilder than yesterday's forest.

By afternoon, we arrive at Khopra Ridge (3,660 m) itself, a broad viewpoint staring directly across the deep Kali Gandaki valley at the towering wall of Dhaulagiri I — one of the most unobstructed 8,000-meter views anywhere in the Annapurna region.

3 Excursion to Sacred Khaire Lake (4,660 m), return to Khopra Ridge
Trek Distance
16 km / 9.9 miles round trip
Highest Altitude
4,660 m / 15,289 ft
Trek Duration
7–9 hrs (Khaire Lake) or 2–3 hrs (light ridge walk)
Khopra Community Teahouse Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is built around choice. For those wanting the full high-altitude experience, we set off around 5:00 AM on the long side trip to Khaire Lake (4,660 m), following exposed rocky ridgelines and loose scree paths deep into alpine terrain.

The lake itself sits at the base of Annapurna South, its still waters held sacred by Hindu pilgrims who visit during the annual Janai Purnima festival — a quiet, remote spot that feels a world away from the busier trails elsewhere in the Annapurna region.

For trekkers preferring a gentler day, we instead spend the time on shorter walks around Khopra Danda itself, taking in unhurried views of the Dhaulagiri wall without the demands of the full round-trip climb. Either way, we return to the same teahouse for a second night at Khopra Ridge.

4 Trek from Khopra Ridge (3,660 m) to Swanta Village (2,200 m)
Trek Distance
9 km / 5.6 miles
Highest Altitude
3,660 m / 12,008 ft
Trek Duration
4–5 hrs
Community Lodge / Local Teahouse at Swanta Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Khopra Ridge → Upper Chistibung → Swanta Village

We begin our descent from Khopra Ridge, dropping steadily through alpine pasture before the trail enters bamboo groves and pine forest, the terrain softening as we lose altitude.

Passing through Upper Chistibung, the landscape shifts again into terraced farmland, a clear sign we're returning to more populated, cultivated hillsides after two days above the tree line.

By afternoon, we reach Swanta, a traditional Magar village known for its distinctive red-clay plastered stone houses and organic farming. We spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the village school, visiting the local cheese factory, or simply chatting with residents over tea.

5 Trek from Swanta to Ulleri, Drive to Pokhara
Trek Distance
12 km / 7.5 miles
Drive / Flight
3–4 hrs
Highest Altitude
2,200 m / 7,218 ft
Trek Duration
4–5 hrs
Not included (trip concludes in Pokhara) Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Swanta → Chittre → Ulleri/Hile → Nayapul → Pokhara (drive)

Our final trekking day takes us from Swanta through Chittre, the trail continuing its gradual descent through forest and scattered farmland toward the lower Annapurna foothills.

we make our way down to Ulleri , the road-head that marks the end of trekking on this itinerary.

From Ulleri , our private vehicle carries us back to Pokhara, bringing the Khopra Ridge Trek to a close — five days of quieter trails, close-up 8,000-meter views, and traditional Magar and Gurung villages well off the more crowded Annapurna routes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Trip Info & FAQs for Khopra Ridge Trek — 5 Days from Pokhara

Difficulty & Who It Suits

Not necessarily. The trek suits reasonably active walkers who can manage 4–6 hours a day with a light daypack. A basic level of fitness and some hiking background help, especially on the steeper stretches near Muldai and Khopra, but it isn't a technical route.
Yes, particularly for families with older children comfortable with moderate daily walking. The trail is safe, relatively uncrowded, and has comfortable teahouse stops throughout — just build in a flexible pace and proper acclimatization for younger trekkers.
Generally yes, including for solo women travelers. Community-run lodges along the route are known for their hospitality, and during peak season the trail sees enough foot traffic that solo trekkers rarely feel isolated. That said, joining a small group can mean easier access to rooms in busy periods and shared guide costs.

Accommodation & Food

Tourist-standard community lodges throughout, with clean rooms, a comfortable bed, and a mattress with a thin blanket. Bringing your own sleeping bag is worth considering for the colder nights at altitude — these can also be rented in Pokhara or Kathmandu if needed.
Every lodge runs its own small restaurant, generally serving a mostly vegetarian range — pasta, noodles, potatoes, eggs, rice, bread, soups, and seasonal vegetables. Breakfast and dinner are eaten at the lodge you sleep in, while lunch is typically served en route to the next stop.

Facilities & Practicalities

Hot showers are available (often for a small extra fee) at lower villages like Ghandruk, Tadapani, and Ghorepani. At Khopra Ridge and Bayeli Kharka, however, water supply is limited, so shower facilities are minimal — bring your own towel and soap.
Bottled mineral water is sold at some lodges, but carrying water purification tablets is the more eco-friendly choice given limited plastic disposal facilities in these remote settlements.
Yes, most guesthouses offer battery charging, though it's worth bringing a spare battery or power bank as backup and your own adapter.
Basic mobile coverage (Ncell/NTC) reaches villages like Ghandruk, Tadapani, and Dobato, though signal weakens at higher altitude. Some lodges offer paid Wi-Fi with limited speed — a local SIM card is a good backup for better connectivity lower down.

Guides & Porters

Yes — if you're working with a tighter budget or don't want a full-board package, a standalone local guide can be arranged separately to add safety and local knowledge to your trek.
Porters are typically arranged on a shared basis, generally carrying luggage for two trekkers per porter (with each guest's pack capped at a reasonable weight). Trekking poles help on steeper, snow-covered sections and are advisable, if not compulsory.

Permits & Route

Since the trek falls within the Annapurna Conservation Area, you'll need the ACAP entry permit along with a TIMS card. These are typically arranged in advance by your trekking agency.
The trek's highest point is Khaire Lake at 4,660 m, reached via a full-day side excursion from Khopra Ridge (3,660 m), which is the highest overnight stop on the standard route.

Visa & Insurance

Your travel insurance should provide coverage suitable for trekking up to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m (13,550 ft). The policy should ideally include:

Helicopter evacuation
High-altitude medical treatment
Emergency medical rescue
Trip cancellation or interruption
Accident and injury treatment
Hospitalization and medicines
No. Travel insurance is not included in the Annapurna Base Camp Trek package. Travellers should arrange suitable insurance separately before arriving in Nepal. Make sure the policy specifically covers trekking at the maximum altitude of the trek, as some standard travel insurance policies have altitude restrictions.
Most foreign travellers require a Nepal tourist visa, while Indian citizens are exempt from this requirement. Foreign visitors generally need a passport with at least six months of validity and the required visa documents and fees.

A tourist visa can generally be obtained through visa-on-arrival facilities at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or designated border entry points, or through a Nepalese embassy/consulate before travelling.
For an 11-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek, a 15-day Nepal tourist visa may be enough if your travel schedule is fixed. However, choosing a 30-day visa gives you more flexibility in case of flight delays, itinerary changes, or if you plan to stay in Nepal for a few extra days before or after the trek. The source content states that a 30-day visa typically costs around $50 USD.

Equipment

Trekking poles are highly recommended as they can reduce pressure on your knees and provide better balance, particularly on the steep stone steps around Sinuwa and during the descent toward Jhinu Danda. Crampons or microspikes are generally only necessary for winter trekking, especially from December to February, when snow or ice may be present on the trail. If required, these can be rented in Pokhara or Kathmandu.
Choose sturdy, waterproof trekking boots with good ankle support and reliable grip. Avoid wearing completely new boots on the trek, as they should be properly broken in beforehand to reduce the risk of blisters. A slightly larger fit can also be useful when wearing thick trekking socks, especially during long walking days.
Pack clothing that can be layered according to changing temperatures and altitude. Useful items include thermal wear, fleece layers, a down jacket, comfortable trekking trousers, insulating layers, and waterproof outerwear. You should also carry waterproof trekking boots, gloves, a warm hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a sleeping bag, headlamp, reusable water bottle (1–2 litres), toiletries, personal medicines, and important documents such as your passport and trekking permits.

Health and Safety

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is generally considered manageable when following a properly planned itinerary and travelling with an experienced, licensed guide. The route has established trails, regular trekking activity, and teahouses along the way. The main concerns are altitude-related illness and the more challenging terrain between Deurali and Machhapuchhre Base Camp. Proper pacing and guidance can help manage these risks.
The itinerary is planned with gradual elevation gains to allow your body time to adjust. Guides can monitor trekkers for signs of altitude sickness and overall well-being throughout the journey. Diamox (acetazolamide) may be used for altitude sickness when recommended by a qualified medical professional. If serious symptoms appear, the trek should be adjusted and appropriate emergency assistance arranged.
You will be accompanied by licensed guides familiar with the Annapurna region and local trail conditions. The itinerary may be adjusted according to your health, group pace, weather, and trail conditions.

Trekkers should also maintain good hydration, get sufficient rest, dress appropriately for the weather, and eat nutritious meals. The source recommends around 3–4 litres of warm water per day, approximately 6–7 hours of sleep, and avoiding alcohol and smoking during the trek.

Payment

You can make a booking by completing the online booking form or by contacting the team through email, phone, or WhatsApp. Once your travel details are confirmed and the required 10% deposit has been received, your booking will be secured. You will then be asked to provide the necessary documents, after which the team will share the information and preparations needed for your trek.
Several payment options are available, including local or international bank transfers, Visa, AMEX, Mastercard, debit cards, Wise, Western Union, and secure online payment through the website. Payments can also be made in USD cash upon arrival in Kathmandu. The exact payment instructions will be provided during the booking process.
Although the trek package covers most of the main services, travellers should keep some extra budget for personal expenses. These may include Nepal visa fees, suitable travel insurance, tips for guides and porters, snacks, drinks, hot showers, drinking water, souvenirs, and equipment rentals.
Around $15–$20 USD per day (approximately 2,500–3,000 NPR) should generally be sufficient for personal expenses during the trek. This can cover items such as drinks, snacks, Wi-Fi, charging, hot showers, and tips. Since ATMs may not be readily available along much of the route, it is advisable to withdraw or exchange enough cash in Kathmandu or Pokhara and carry smaller denominations such as 20, 50, 100, or 500 NPR
