This is the most complete single-day helicopter tour of the Everest region on offer — combining two of the Khumbu's most iconic landmarks in one flight. Where the standard Everest Base Camp helicopter tour focuses on Everest alone, this version adds the glacial lake system that Everest Base Camp trekkers usually only reach via a demanding side trek through the Gokyo valley. For travellers who want the fullest possible Everest-region experience without committing to a multi-day trek, this is the most comprehensive option available by air. Flights operate mainly in spring and autumn, though this route also flies in winter.

We leave our Kathmandu hotel well before sunrise for the transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport, where a weight check and safety briefing precede boarding. The helicopter lifts off and heads east, the Kathmandu Valley shrinking behind us as the Himalayan foothills of Solukhumbu rise ahead, with the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges visible off to the north. After a brief refuelling stop at Lukla, we continue up the Dudh Koshi valley, passing directly over Namche Bazaar and Tengboche Monastery, both instantly recognisable from thousands of trekking photographs but rarely seen from this angle. As we near the head of the valley, the Khumbu Glacier and Everest Base Camp come into view below, the icefall's crevasses sharply defined in the morning light. Since helicopters don't land directly at Everest Base Camp, we continue to Kala Patthar, touching down at 5,545 metres for five to ten intense minutes among Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse before lifting off again for the short hop to the Gokyo Lakes at 4,750 metres. Here the mood shifts entirely — instead of ice and grey rock, we're greeted by a startling turquoise lake set against Gokyo Ri and Cho Oyu, with ten to fifteen minutes to explore the shoreline and take in one of the Khumbu's most photographed but rarely-flown-to spots. From Gokyo we fly to Syangboche for a relaxed breakfast at Hotel Everest View, taking in Ama Dablam and the wider Everest massif from the terrace before reboarding for the return leg via Lukla. By late morning we're back in Kathmandu, having covered two of the Everest region's signature landmarks — base camp and Gokyo — in a single, unhurried day.
