Dhampus and Astam are two of the most accessible Gurung villages in the Annapurna foothills — close enough to Pokhara for a single day, but far enough from the main trekking corridor that they see a fraction of the foot traffic. This countryside hike links the two along stone-paved paths through terraced farmland, with Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and on clear days Manaslu visible across the valley for much of the route. It's a genuine taste of Annapurna-region trekking, culture and views included, without committing to a multi-day itinerary — well suited to travellers with limited time in Pokhara who still want real trail time.
Hotel → Phedi/Kande (drive) → Dhampus (hike) → Astam (hike) → Pokhara (drive)
7:00 AM — Hotel Pickup. We drive from Pokhara to Phedi or Kande, the standard starting point for the Dhampus trail, roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Lakeside.
8:00 AM — Start of Hike. From the trailhead, we begin climbing through forest and open farmland, gaining height steadily toward Dhampus.
8:00 AM – 10:00 AM — Hike to Dhampus. Trek duration: approx. 2 hrs. The trail climbs through mixed forest before opening onto terraced hillsides, with the first clear views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli appearing as we gain height. Dhampus itself is a traditional Gurung settlement with a long history tied to Gurkha regiments, and its stone houses and prayer flags mark a clear shift into hill-village life.
10:00 AM – 12:30 PM — Dhampus to Astam. Trek duration: approx. 2.5 hrs. From Dhampus, the trail undulates along the ridge toward Astam, a quieter village with far fewer visitors than the main Annapurna Base Camp corridor. Views open up further here, with Manaslu occasionally visible to the northeast on clear days, and the terraced fields below give a genuine sense of everyday Gurung agricultural life.
12:30 PM – 1:30 PM — Lunch at Astam. Time on site: 60 min. We take lunch in Astam, often at a local teahouse, before beginning the descent back toward the road.
2:00 PM – 3:30 PM — Descent & Drive Back to Pokhara. We descend to meet our vehicle and drive back to Pokhara, arriving at the hotel by mid-to-late afternoon.
